Greetings, September, 2005
As the crow flies, it's about 40 miles south west of Tijuana. Being that we are not crows we have to drive about seventy miles over the hills and mountains to reach the little community of Testarazo nestled in and around huge rocks and boulders. Testarazo is dry and hot! Spectrum has a Bible club there. It's a long way off but the kids really love club.
Yolanda, a Mexican missionary, works among the Indian migrant children there, She asked us if we would bring our program down to the large migrant camp at Testarazo. She and a few woman volunteers are doing a great job with the one hundred and sixty kids in camp.
Wednesday morning, we loaded up early and headed our vans along the winding two-lane roads into the mountains. With us was a large group of helpers from Fresno California. I mention Fresno because God always seems to give us the right group on the right day. It was going to be a very hot day in Testarazo and Fresno is a very hot city!
We stopped briefly at the little church in Testarazo while Paul and John were finishing their vacation Bible school. The children were in craft time; spread all over the church floor they were making Cheerio necklaces by carefully threading the sugary Cheerios on a string. The kids were not to eat the Cheerios but they looked so good some could not resist. I watched as a little girl carefully picked a Cheerio from the bowel and put it in her mouth. Her sister quickly took the Cheerio out of her mouth and placed it back in the bowl.
We convoyed down the dirt road a short distance into the large fenced migrant camp. There we positioned our vans and started setting up the generator and tents. We set up our tents under a long large metal roof which protected us somewhat from the sun. The cement floor provided a place where the kids could sit and watch us with wide-eyed interest.
In the early afternoon our program was underway. One hundred forty children took showers and received clean clothes. Many received free haircuts. Soon kids were everywhere holding sno-cones, eating water melon, bananas and candy. Indeed this was a big day for these cute little Indian kids. Let me show you some pictures so you can see for yourselves. Along with the kids we want to thank you for making this occasion possible. Yolanda really appreciated our help and encouragement.
For all of us: Pastor von (Director of Spectrum Ministries.)
